End the Trial Penalty will eliminate the coercive elements of plea bargaining to restore our fundamental constitutional rights, including the right to jury trial.

Policy areas covered include policy ideas to combat coercive practices in the plea bargaining process, to improve data collection and transparency, and to foster post-trial reform and accountability measures.

We will achieve our mission by:

  • Partnering with impacted people and their families, community leaders, local organizers, and the public to end coercive plea-bargaining practices and the trial penalty;

  • Raising awareness of this fundamental issue and how it drives many flaws in our criminal legal system, including the excessive use of pre-trial detention, mass incarceration, and racial disparities;

  • Advocating policy reforms to drive change;

  • Forming and maintaining relationships with important decision-makers and officials to inform them of the coalition's work and policy recommendations; and

  • Serving as a resource for people interested in participating in an impactful criminal justice reform movement.
